The staff present refused to help me locate another vehicle and dismissed me refusing g to give me their names. Never in my life I was so disrespected and treated with such insolence. The action of the staff has costed me a great deal and ruined my vacation. To whomever reads this comment I recommend utilizing the services of Locauto who are less expensive and much more helpful. I will place a formal complaint in the USA as soon as I return.
For the first time in my life I feel ashamed to be Italian.
When I booked online and just reach here about 30 minutes before than my original pickup time, one of staffs here just told me that the car I booked is not prepared yet because I arrived EARLIER and suggest higher level, higher price car. I denied the sugestion because the price was 1/2 more expensive than original reserved price, than she just told me "than wait until reserved time", and did not proceed my pickup process(make contract paper, etc.).
When I finished pickup process, original pickup time was already passed tens minutes, but the fact is, the car was not in the garage! Garage guy just get the car after checking my contract paper.
I spent more than 30 minutes just to pick up my car! I used Hertz several times but this is the first time I feel so bad. Terrible!
My drop-off was uneventful and pleasant.
The worker at the front desk acted like she was doing me a favor by talking to me, when in fact clients are doing her and the company a favor by providing you business and paying your meager salary.
When I called the Hertz help line, nobody could speak English. Disappointing service by a German company. EU standards anyone? Wasted 6 hours of my time.
I was always an advocate of Hertz, based on the fact that I work in the German government, but unfortunately this experience was terrible.
Do yourself a favor, skip Hertz and walk around 100 meters down the road to AVIS to rent a car. It took me 5 minutes to rent a car with AVIS.
Before returning the car I proceed it to FILL IT Up as they had indicated ( gas station 2 blocks from the rental place - ONLY CASH accepted just FYI) and went to return the car. I drove down the ramp I had originally got it from and handed the keys to the attendant , after confirming the tank was full and quick walk around of the vehicle he thanked us and sent us on our way. Few TIPS - take you license and passport ( if needed), Fill up the car before returning and always get insurance since you never know what can happen ( our insurance was purchased through Expedia when we made the car reservation).
However, the Hertz Rome Testaccio rental office on Via Galvani 57 where we started and where we had a confirmed reservation was a VERY BAD experience!!! First, it was impossible to find the office. At the location, our very helpful cab driver spent 15 minutes on foot walking about, talking to people, trying to find the Hertz rental office among the many shops. It is a very quiet area. Finally we discovered that the Hertz location was in the underground parking, but there was no above ground sign. When we found the tiny underground office, there was NO ONE THERE!!!! The door was locked and the place was totally empty. There was only a small paper sign on the door that said the office was CLOSED FOR 2 WEEKS in August for vacation. Our confirmed reservation for this location gave no notice of this. This was very distressing! What do we do? We had chosen Hertz for its solid reputation, not a fly by night outfit. We needed a car!
Very helpful people on street told us to go to the Hertz Via Veneto office and found us another cab. This cost us an additional 30 Euro to get there.
At the Hertz Via Veneto office, all the cars were already reserved. They had no cars free. However, the woman there was very helpful and after a considerable amount of time was able to enable us to take someone else's reservation. We very happy and relieved. However, after leaving the location, we found that the gas tank was only 1/3 full. This cost us another 50 Euros to fill it up.
We were very happy with our Fiat 500. However, at the end of our trip, the return of the car at the Rome (Leonardo) Airport was also confusing. Goggle maps took us to the rental office location. We saw no big signs for car rental return. This was distressing as we needed to get to our flight. A helpful man explained that the car return was by the airport arrivals entrance. We then found it to our relief. Clear instructions for the location of the car return should be provided when one receives the car.
The Hertz woman at the return desk was very friendly and told us that we should have taken a picture of the low gas gauge so that she could give us a refund. (I had lost the earlier gas fill up receipt.)
In total, the Hertz employees we met were very friendly and helpful. We were very happy with their service. However, the rental cost an unexpected 80 additional euros (gas and cab) plus considerable distress from the location closed for vacation and confusion with the car return.
Terrible, terrible Hertz. Desk staff were alright, but cold, but the garage was atrocious. The staff were serving customers at 30-45minutes a time, and wasting everyone’s time. Some staff could not speak English. We rented and spent money on the best and most expensive category of car and was gifted a car with two categories below, that was 120€ cheaper. We complained and the staff argued the boot size was the same. We argued more, and he eventually made his staff member bike for 30 minutes in the heat to get us another car. But I am not done yet. The car he came back with (45 minutes later) was the same size, same lower category (cheaper) and very dirty, as it had just been used by someone else, as if they expected us to sit in someone else’s filth. There was bird poo and dirt everywhere. They said they could clean the car, which took us another 45 minutes. An absolutely terrible experience at Hertz. I do not recommend renting a car from here. Ever.
Kind Regards,

One last thing, if you have bags, wait on the office with them, or get them of the car before you return the car in the garage, because the parking is one block away.
I had booked for a fiat 500 manual a day ago. When i reached the Roma termini counter to pick up my car, they said they only had automatic ones available. Instead they asked me to pick up from this location, since thay had a manual car available.
It turned out to be a super upgrade to a Jeep renegade :D ...
For the hassle to travel to this location, Hertz was more than kind enough to waive off the tank refill. So i could return the car with whatever fuel was left in it.
Great service and certainly coming back Hertz !!!
